For the Love of Lighting

If you have been following this blog for any amount of time, you know I have a love for lighting, but I am so picky.  Remember our infamous dining room chandelier?  We went over 6 months with that hideous outdated/broken fixture. 
I have been in love with these DeVine balls-- a vine from Thailand that has been formed into a circle and bleached--ever since we found them in Atlanta several months back.  Shades of Light sells them for $479! 
 

We bought them with the intention of turning them into light fixtures and selling them at our booth for much less than Shades of Light sells them for.  The more I looked at them, the more I wanted to keep one for myself.  I had a light fixture I loved in our "round room,"but I knew the DeVine Ball would make that room even more unique and interesting. Here is how we made our own...

We started out with the guts of an old shiny brass light fixture.

 

After wiping it down we applied several coats of Rustoleum Hammered spray paint.  I am not a huge fan of the chemicals in spray paint, but this stuff is a miracle worker.  It makes old ugly brass look like oil rubbed bronze. 

Once it dried Michael attached the lighting to the DeVine ball and we hung it.  

 One of my favorite things about this light is the shadow that is reflected on the ceiling.

Rusted Outdoor Market Recap

I wanted to share some images from the Rusted Outdoor Market that we participated in this past weekend.  We had a mass production of chalkboards a few days before, and many of them have been moved over to our booth, and are for sale there.

This Saturday J. Our Booth

I mentioned in this post that we were getting a booth at the Antique Market of San Jose.  I am pretty sure everyone thought my "Exciting News" was that I was having a baby.  The funny thing is that when I titled the post the assumption everyone had never even crossed my mind.  So no baby yet, but I am super excited about this new venture.  I wanted to share some pictures of the booth.  Of course it is still in the works, and will take a little time to fill it completely, but its coming along.  

The space had these awful stripes and they were a high gloss finish with a gold undertone.  Definitely needed an update.

3 coats of paint later the stripes were finally covered up!  I went with BM Swiss Coffee for the walls and BM Sandy Hook Gray for the floors.  I absolutely love the way the colors came out.

 I used a natural fiber rug from World Market to define the space for the table and add some warmth.  I am planning to do a full post on the table and chairs this Friday.  I am SO happy with the way they turned out.  The lantern is one that we originally planned to use in our house, but it works perfectly in the space.  It needed to be rewired, so Michael and his dad worked their magic and now we have light.

So far it has been really fun, and it is a constant design project.  As things sell I am able to restyle the space, which is both good and bad because I could be up there every day changing things around.  :) If you are in the area I'd love for you to stop in and see our work.  

Ready, Set, Random

Where has time gone? Is Thanksgiving really next week? I apologize for my lack of posts, but life has been a little bit crazy.  A little bit of good crazy and a little bit of bad crazy.

This is going to be random, but here is a little update on life via my iPhone pictures...

My little Etsy venture has been going well & I made my first sale over a month ago (along with many others since then).  If you are looking for a great christmas gift, or the perfect hostess gift for all those holiday parties head over to J.KellyEvents.

We have some new lighting additions in the house.  The Ikea Ottava Pendant has been sitting on our living room floor for about three months and it is now hanging above the sink.  At the amazing price of $29.99 we could not pass it up & it really adds a nice design element to the kitchen.  It has a little bit of a restoration hardware feel.  I am considering putting an eddison bulb in it, but have not gotten around to it yet.

We found this amazing lantern from an antique store just down the road.  Just a little bit of rewiring and it will be good as new.

For a dose of cuteness this little pup is growing wayyyy to fast.  I swore I would never let my dogs get  in bed with me, but she is just the best little snuggle pup.

We've had some beautiful weather, and it was absolutely perfect for the Blue Angels show a few weeks back.

We had our first fire and Bailey was thoroughly amused.  She sat and stared the entire night, and only tried to walk into it a few times once.         

We are still getting things put away around here, but I am loving our "new to us" oriental rug.  The round room has proven challenging in finding the perfect furniture layout.  I like everything to be squared and in a round room that is a little difficult.  I am planning on selling the flax colored sofa and replacing it with two chairs and an ottoman.  

We have also been extremely busy in the yard.  The guys that pick up our yard trash must think we have a forest in the back yard because this is about the 5th massive pile that we have left them.  We are hoping to do some planting this weekend.  Yay for new bushes and flowers!

The Infamous Chandelier

Every single surface in our home has been touched, whether it has been painted, retiled, refinished, or completely gutted.  Well almost every single surface...our original chandelier is still hanging.  It is HIDEOUS.  The first time we looked at the house I said, "If we buy this house, that chandelier is the first thing I am ripping out."  I am eating my words now, since things are finally finishing up and that awful fixture is still hanging.

I have been searching high and low for a new chandelier, but I have not found one that I just love.  Well, I take that back.  I have, but they are all way to expensive for my shoestring budget.  Here are my requirements...
1.  Puts off lots of light, since it is the only chandelier in the large dining/living room.
2.  Large enough to fill the high ceiling, but cannot be too tall since it will be hanging from the beam.
3.  Will look good with a farm table.
4.  Unique, yet compliments the space.
